This is a love letter to injustice and hate. I do not condone violence or hate. At the same time, I acknowledge the fact that we have the ability to hold both of these qualities inside of us and the destructive nature it can create.
I was inspired by Into Actions call to artist. It really inspired me to think of how to use my voice to say something new. While I don’t usually share my views about politics or social issues, I feel very deeply about the issues facing us today.
This character is calling out to justice, but it’s also filled with passion, anger, vengeance, and rage.
I don’t believe it’s just for people in power to forget the value of everyday people. We’ve been putting off the value of people for too long, and it seems right that everyday people are really starting to take it back! At the same time, I don’t believe in violence and fear that we may easily be leaning towards hating one another. Anyone who thinks differently than us automatically seems to be the enemy and I think to myself that that is just a continuation of misunderstanding and hate.
I wonder, is there is a way for us to resolve our differences without having to resort to even more violence or hate? Are “they” really that much different than us? I wonder if sometimes “they” have feelings too and why it is that “they” think the way that they do. What if hate was just something that was taught at a young age? Can we teach the future to love just the same? When can we learn to put our arms down and learn to live with one another? We’re all a part of the same race, and we’re here sharing this same space together.
It was very uncomfortable to create this character, yet I felt the need to explore it. Every conflicting and contradictory feeling about it.
This is a call to understanding and an invitation to question the darker aspects within each other and ourselves…
Much love to Alba Castro for doing the amazing make up.
Here’s to peace, freedom, justice, love, and understanding.
